DO YOU KNOW WHAT GRADABLES AND UNGRADABLES ARE?

Aggiornamento: 14 apr

In the world of English grammar, adjectives are a crucial element. They are descriptors that give more information about a noun, making our expressions more vivid and precise. However, not all adjectives are created equal. They fall into two categories: gradable and ungradable.

Understanding Gradable Adjectives.

Gradable adjectives, as the name suggests, can be graded, that is, they can be modified or intensified. These are the adjectives we often pair with adverbs such as "very", "extremely", and "quite" to increase or decrease the intensity of the adjective. For instance, you can say "very hot", "extremely cold", or "quite interesting". This category of adjectives allows us to reflect different degrees of a characteristic.

On the other hand, ungradable adjectives are adjectives that cannot be modified in degree. Words like "unique", "perfect", and "fantastic" fall into this category. These adjectives represent absolute states that cannot be intensified or diminished. Hence, it would be incorrect to say "that's extremely fantastic".

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. While you can't say "extremely fantastic" because "fantastic" is an ungradable adjective, you can say "quite fantastic" or "absolutely fantastic". These adverbs do not imply degrees but rather intensify the adjective by reinforcing its inherent meaning.

To sum up, the key difference between gradable and ungradable adjectives lies in their ability to be modified. Gradable adjectives can be modified to express varying degrees of a characteristic, while ungradable adjectives denote absolute states that cannot be altered or intensified in degree. Understanding this distinction is essential to using adjectives correctly and making our expressions more nuanced and accurate.
