Tips for studying idioms

What are idioms by the way? An idiom could be defined as a group of words in a fixed order that has a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word on its own:

To "bite off more than you can chew" is an idiom that means you have tried to do something which is too difficult for you ( as per definition given by the Cambridge English dictionary).


Learning idioms can be a fun and rewarding experience! Idioms, as a matter of fact, are expressions that have a figurative meaning different from the literal meaning of the words used, but how can we possibly start to learn them?


Here are some tips you may find useful:


1 - Start with common idioms: begin by familiarizing yourself with common idioms in English as a starting point. Idioms are widely used in daily conversations and serve as a solid basis for understanding. Look for lists of common idioms online or in English language textbooks to enhance your knowledge.


2 - Study their meanings and origins: 

Understanding the background of an idiom can enhance your recall and usage accuracy.

Research the origins of idioms and strive to link them with their literal meanings.

3. When you come across a new idiom, utilize context clues to deduce its meaning.

Focus on the surrounding words and phrases to decipher the idiom's figurative sense.


4. Practice using idioms in sentences: 

Practice incorporating idioms into sentences:After acquiring a few idioms, make a habit of utilizing them in sentences. This practice aids in understanding their meanings and incorporating them into your everyday language. Jot down sentences featuring idioms and endeavor to include them in discussions with native English speakers.


5. Read and listen to native English materials: 


Immerse yourself in native English content like books, newspapers, movies, and podcasts. Take note of the idioms used and strive to comprehend their contextual meanings. Write down your idioms according to their meaning. Remember that mastering idioms takes commitment and regular practice. Stay patient and persistent in your efforts. Soon enough, you will naturally and confidently integrate idioms into your everyday conversations.
